Utopias and Dystopias Research Group, led by Dr. Ofer Katchergin, is a multi-institutional group whose aim is to explore the notions of utopia and dystopia from various disciplinary perspectives. Utopias and dystopias will be investigated/studied as fictional literary genres, political and manifest social movements – both historical and contemporary, as well as a cultural discourse, which engulfs us all. Moreover, the utopian trope is manifested in current political and cultural discourse throughout the entire political spectrum and in various phenomena such as multi-culturalism, religious fundamentalism and social justice zeal.

• Researching the problematics of utopias and dystopias in various social fields: Literature, sociology, philosophy, cultural studies, history etc.
• Promoting the understanding of numerous representations of utopian and dystopian motives in our culture and society as well as their relevance to constructing our worldviews and political dynamics. • Promoting critical utopian literacy in education, and specifically in Oranim student and faculty community. • Providing undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to engage in research group projects.

• Organization of meetings and workshops.
• Organization of a seminar or a conference at the end of the academic year.

עופר צ'רגין  

Ofer Katchergin,  a senior lecturer in sociology, critical discourse analysis and gender studies is the Head of the Gender Equality Program in Humanities and Arts at Oranim Academic College and the former head of civics and sociology departments in Oranim.  His research topics include the intersection between cultural and historical discourses and gender:  In regard to utopias and dystopias, the intersection between the utopian/dystopian trope and current political ideologies.

Hadas Genis is a lecturer (Phd. in education) at Emek Yezreel Academic College. An expert in alternative education, and a developer of soft skills and learning strategies.

Ayala Zur is a senior lecturer at Oranim Academic College of Education, department chair of Master of Teaching and the Graduate Student Research and Thesis Unit, Faculty of Graduate Studies, at Oranim. She is engaged in research on the physical environment of a school and its implication on the nature of school experience. Her research focuses on the sense of place and place attachment, and on the affinity between these constructs and issues of identity, society and culture.

Dr. Shai Ferraro


Shai Ferraro is a research associate at the University of Haifa and Tel Hai College, and serves as the secretary of the Israeli Association for the Study of Religions. He is the author of Women and Gender Issues in British Paganism, 1945-1990 (2020), and has co-edited Contemporary Alternative Spiritualities in Israel (2016) and Magic and Witchery in the Modern West (2019), all published by Palgrave Macmillan.

Yaniv Hakim (Phd. in Agriculture, Food and Environment, Hebrew University). Works at Nativ school TLV as a science teacher and at the Ministry of Education, as an instructor.

Dr. Kobi (Yaaqov) Assoulin

Dr. Kobi (Yaaqov) Assoulin is a senior lecturer in philosophy and education. Dr. Assoulin teaches in Oranim Academic College of Education (Israel); he is also a member of the editorial board of Dvarim, Oranim's Academic Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies. His research interests include political philosophy of education, cultural studies and hermeneutics. He has published, in Israel and abroad, papers on the question of liberalism and pragmatism, the issue of freedom of speech within the educational system, the way recognition is represented in movies and the way questions of memory are represented in literature. Currently, Dr. Assoulin is leading an academic research group, exploring the issue of formal and a-formal trends in privatizing/pluralizing education.
Tentative paper title, to be published: Supporting Pluralization and Privatization of Education: A Libertarian-Communitarian Argument.

יעל פויס  


Yael Poyas is a professor at Oranim College of Education, Israel.  She teaches language acquisition and literature in MEd programs. Her fields of interest are reading literature in multicultural contexts, discourse in the literature classroom and language teacher education. Her research explores relations between text and readers in multicultural groups, and readers' relations among themselves. She is a member of ARLE (The International Association for Research in L1 Education) since 1999 and a board member since 2019.
